Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership

Cambridge AHRC International Postgraduate Conference

As a flagship opportunity in the Cambridge AHRC DTP’s training provision, we offer our second-year students the chance to organize a major international postgraduate conference each September, involving delegates from the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School of Cologne University, the Australian National University, the European University at Saint Petersburg, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University.

Organizing our annual conference is an unparalleled chance to develop your leadership skills through a hands-on activity with tangible results. It allows you to plan, manage and accomplish in practice all of the main tasks associated with the conception and realization of a large-scale, cross-disciplinary academic meeting, including logistical, selection, programming and communications matters.

From the selection of papers and arrangement of panels, through setting up accommodation, catering and entertainment, to website development, the management of online registration and the production of a professional report on the event, conference organizing can give you an impressive range of skills which are highly sought after by academic and other employers, and which will be useful for you in whatever career you choose following your PhD.

As a member of the organizing committee you will be a lodestone for delegates and staff from our partner institutions and so benefit from particularly strong collaborative ties with academics from across the world.

An AHRC representative who visited our first conference, described it as ‘impressive’ and on a scale beyond anything else she had seen when visiting other AHRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnerships. If you want to make your mark by delivering an academic event which resonates with national funding bodies and international universities, then organizing the DTP conference is a proven way to do so.

And if you are not a second year, or do not feel able to devote the time involved in organizing this event, you can still apply to give a paper at the conference and reach an audience which crosses continents and disciplines, or else come along to audit the panels and keynote lectures, and meet fellow researchers from around the world.
